A local's guide to Mullumbimby
They call it the biggest little town in Australia, and once you've spent a morning there, you'll understand why.
Mullumbimby — Mullum to anyone who's spent time here — sits in the Brunswick Valley at the base of Mount Chincogan, just five minutes down the road from Butterfly Lane. It's been quietly doing its own thing since the 70s, when a wave of alternative lifestyle seekers arrived and never really left. Today the community is artists, farmers, musicians, healers, families — and the kind of people who moved here from cities, spent one weekend, and started googling local real estate. The spirit of the place is genuinely hard to describe and easy to feel - We absolutely love it (you can check out our founding story here).
Everything listed below is also saved on a series of Google Maps saved places (technology, yay!).

Here's where we'd send you.
Coffee and breakfast
Baker and Daughter is the one. Technically a bakery, but with solid coffee and an incredible array of freshly baked goods — run by a local family who pour a lot of heart into everything they make. It's a massive favourite with the locals, which tells you everything.
Paseyo is worth knowing too — a popular spot for exceptional vegetarian dishes made with the kind of love and intention you only really find in a place like Mullum.
Heaps Good for a relaxed morning: sambos, wraps, salads, hot bowls, all the drinks. Exactly what it sounds like.
Timbo Mullum if you're after Organic AllPress coffee with locally sourced ingredients and an Asian flair. Good spot to set yourself up before the farmers market.
The farmers market
Every Friday, 7am to 11am, at the Mullumbimby Showground on Main Arm Road - it's been running since 2010 and it's not-for-profit — every dollar goes direct to the farmers and producers. Home-baked sourdough, the local harvest, fresh florals, preserves. Live music under the fig trees. Get there before 9am if you want first pick of anything worth having.
There's also a Community Craft Market on the 3rd Saturday of each month (8am–2pm, Summers Park), and a Flea Market at Byron Community College if you're in the mood for a dig around.
Pubs, breweries and dinner
Wandana Brewing Co. is our local — and the beer that's in the fridge at Butterfly Lane. A small-batch brewery on Manns Road with views of Mount Chincogan at sundown that are genuinely spectacular. Food truck with banging burgers and nachos, regular live music, great vibe. Worth a long afternoon.
Mullumbimby Continental (53 Stuart St) is the best dinner in town — a wine bar and Euro-esque bistro that somehow feels like Melbourne without losing the warmth of a small town. From the team behind some well-regarded Melbourne venues. Amazing food, the best cocktails in town. Book ahead.
Pink Lotus (72A Burringbar St) for Vietnamese — always a good vibe, super fresh and tasty.
Ottilies for wood-fired pizza. Owned by the same family as Baker and Daughter, so you already know the standard.
The Middle Pub (46 Burringbar St) for the full Mullum experience. Check out Balcony Beats on the balcony and stay for Krapaoke on Friday nights — you'll see every man and his dog and it's glorious. $20 meal every night of the week.
If you make it to Brunswick Heads (10 minutes), Hotel Brunswick is a classic venue that's hosted some famous musicians over the years. There's usually a great band on Sunday afternoons in the beer garden.
Wellness and bathing
Kiva Spa (McGougans Lane) is the locals' bathhouse — low-key, laid-back, tucked down a laneway in the middle of town with an Indonesian feel. Hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, plunge pool. Find it by looking for the bamboo door.
The Banya (35-37 Burringbar St) is a beautifully designed European-style bathhouse right on the main street. Wood-fired sauna, cold plunge, steam room. You can also just stop in for a coffee or a wine, which we appreciate.
Mukti Beauty Rooms (6 Smith St) is a specialised luxury facial treatment spa using Mukti Organics Skincare, a multi-award-winning organic beauty brand that's actually made right here in Mullum. Butterfly Lane guests get a discount — ask us for the code.
There are also yoga studios, pilates, sound healing, tea ceremonies and energy work happening all over town. Keep an eye on the posters around the high street — plenty of it doesn't have a digital presence.
Music, dance and arts
Ecstatic Dance runs on Fridays at St John's Hall in Mullumbimby — if you've never been to one and you're curious, this is as good a place as any to try it.
Balcony Beats at the Middle Pub is old-school beats until sunset on the balcony. A very good way to spend an afternoon.
Brunswick Heads Picture House does cinema, circus, cabaret and comedy. Worth checking what's on when you're here.
Beaches
Brunswick Heads is the local beach pick — beautiful area, and you can swim in the river and Simpsons Creek as well as the ocean. Great for an early morning dip followed by breakfast in town.
New Brighton is a beautiful beach right next to a cute little town. Grab a coffee at the Salty Mangrove after a morning swim.
Wategos in Byron Bay is the secret beach that most tourists walk straight past. Just past the main Byron Bay town. Worth knowing about.
Cabaritia and Norries Head is the whale watching spot — April/May through to October/November. Genuinely special.
Waterfalls and hikes
Killen Falls is a winding dirt track that follows a cascading creek down to a secluded watering hole. One of the best in the area.
Marom Falls is the local secret — a waterfall and large swimming hole that most visitors never find. We'll leave it at that.
Goonengerry Falls for something more of an adventure — 1,194ft of elevation, lookouts, swimming and rainforest.
Protestor Falls in Nightcap National Park for World Heritage rainforest and one of the more spectacular waterfall walks in the region.
Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park is worth the slightly longer drive — a unique waterfall formation by day, and after dark the park is full of glow-worms.
Five minutes from your front door. Don't spend the whole trip at Butterfly Lane. (Actually, that's fine too.)
Butterfly Lane is an off-grid (more on that here) luxury tiny home in Bron Shire, just outside Mullumbimby NSW — five minutes from the town centre, twenty minutes north of Byron Bay. If you want to come and explore Mullum for yourself, Book your stay →
