What autumn actually feels like at Butterfly Lane

Autumn at Butterfly Lane is less of a season and more of a gear change. The mist sits lower on Mount Chincogan. The mornings have weight to them. The outdoor bath, already good, becomes something else entirely when the air has bite.

Here's what actually changes when the season turns.

The mornings

In summer, you're up before 6am by accident because the sunrise forces it (which is gorgeous, by the way. No complaints from us). In autumn, there's this window between 7 and 9 where the property is doing something we can only describe as showing off. Mist in the valley. The mountain half-hidden. The wallabies out early, moving slow, not bothered by you.

Chris noticed the echidna came back to the north corner of the property this week. These things feel seasonal, even when they probably aren't.

The outdoor bath

We get asked about the outdoor bath more than anything else — which makes sense, because it is, humbly, a very good outdoor bath. But the version you get in April is different to the one you get in January.

In summer it's about relief. In autumn it's about immersion. You fill it in the late afternoon, let it sit while the light drops behind the ridge, and get in when the air temperature is 15 degrees and the water is 38. The contrast is the whole point.

Above you: the first stars, the silhouette of the mountain, the occasional bat doing its rounds. No one else on the property. No phone (we don't have Wi-Fi and most guests stop trying for a signal after the first morning).

The Outdoor Bath

An understandable crowd pleaser.

The pace

Something about the cooler air slows people down. We see it in the guest book — autumn entries tend to be longer. More considered. People write about what they noticed rather than what they did.

One couple last April wrote that they spent three hours watching the light change on the hill behind the property. Not hiking it. Just watching. That's the autumn version of this place.

When to come

April and May are the sweet spot. School holiday weekends (Easter especially) move fast — we typically have 70–80% of peak weekends filled by early March. Mid-week stays in April and May are usually more available and, honestly, often better — the property feels more like yours when it's quiet on the road outside.
